Special features of a national low-speed marine diesel engine 6DKRN75/160 of 9500 HP are described, designed and manufactured at Briansk Engineering Works. Alterations in the engine design at its adjustment are given. Main results of national tests and first results of the engine operation are shown.

Different methods are considered of a nickel filming on the end face of a surface thermocouple with a flat thermoelectrode, located in between two halves of a cutted insertion. These methods are compared from the point of view of precision and reliability. As an example an oscillogram is given, attained by means of surface thermocouples for this construction.

Equations are given for a comparable evaluation of effectiveness of a single- and two-stage charge air compression in internal combustion engines and also for definition of the optimum operation distribution between compression stages at two-stage compression, considering air cooler efficiency, cooling liquid temperature, compressor efficiency, pressure ratio. Electronic engine speed governors with pulse methods for the control effect (first of all phase) ensure very high precsison of keeping the speed under steady state conditions. The best version is a digital governor.

A new method is offered of the temperature measurement of a piston made of aluminium alloy, base don the measurement of the piston current conductivity variation before and after tests. The operating temperature of the piston surface is defined on this variation and operating time, following calibration curves. Calibration diagrams are shown and also temperature measurement results for a piston of the engine 12ChN 18/20, made of alloy AK-4.

The functional dependence is given for the temperature of the intake air, entering the operating cylinder after it has extended in the starting system elements. Mathematical modelling base is given of the gas exchange process for the air start line, considering air supply through the air distributor and its discharge from this line to the operating cylinder.

Three methods of diesel engine control by cutting off the cylinder operation are taken under consideration: the fuel delivery stop, fuel and air delivery stop, fuel delivery stop and entering exhaust gas into the dead cylinders. The possible use of each of the methods for marine diesel engines are defined. Their defects and advantages from the economical and thermal stress point of view are evaluated.
