Characteristics of the engine operation variation are given, based on experimental investigations at the air suction from the fire area. It is shown that the main factor to decrease the engine power output is the decrease of the oxygen concentration in the fire area, the engine sire depends on its constructive features.

Experimental possibility is considered to decrease the effective fuel consumption under main conditions of the locomotive 14D40 (12DN23/30) characteristics by 3 to 6.5%, and the fuel consumption at idling by 1.1 kg/h as compared to the mass production diesel engine by optimization of geometrical parameters of scavenging ports in the cylinder liner, injector nozzle, fuel delivery timing and the exhaust valve opening.
