Resolving procedures for extremal tasks as applied to optimizing marine diesel engine performance

Applicability is discussed of modern extremal task-resolving procedures to optimizing performance of marine diesel engines. On certain assumptions, linear programming methods can be applied to a task of optimizing marine diesel engine performance (which in fact is essentially a non-linear programming task). A mathematical model of diesel engine is offered for use as a part of extremal task resolving procedure. A method is described of step-by-step optimization of marine diesel engine performance, based on dynamic programming principles. The authors have implemented their method in a software package. An example is given of some alternative results of optimizing calculations for 18??23/2x30 engine based on the proposed method.

Fault classification criteria are offered for express diagnostics of naturally aspirated and turbocharged diesel engines. The criteria have been derived from mathematical modeling of engine operation in test transient conditions. As an example of the criteria' application, the troubleshooting procedure concerning certain kinds of faults is demonstrated, involving use of a dedicated diagnostics kit.
