Evolution of the finite element concept in strength calculation of engine structural parts
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — P. 7–9.
Keywords: diesel engines.

The article contains a brief review of currently used numerical calculation methods as applied to the engine principal parts. The considerations are discussed in favor of discretization methods ensuring more adequate simulation of sophisticatedly shaped parts. In the authors' opinion, it would be practical to use polydimensional approximations based on 3-D finite elements rather than bar- and membrane-type finite elements.

Rotational speed oscillation in gen set shaft systems
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — 9—11.
Keywords: diesel engines.

The results are discussed of analysis and experiment concerning periodical fluctuations of rotational speed in gen sets, in particular, that of the marine alternator 6DG50M operating in parallel. The author offers a calculation method of and a way to reduce periodical speed variation in gen sets. The latter goal is achieved by fitting a pendulum damper on the crankshaft front end, so tuned as to reject the torque harmonic that primarily contributes in speed oscillation for the engine model in question. As far as 6DG50M is concerned, this refers to the 3-rd order harmonic.

Efficiency of spiral cable-type isolators as a means of vibrational protection on marine gen sets
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — 11—14.
Keywords: diesel engines.

The author comes up with his concept of new vibration isolator type. The results are presented of experiments designed to yield characteristics of the isolators in question and their efficiency in terms of vibration and noise moderation.

Safety margin identification in positively overlapped crank webs
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — 15—18.
Keywords: diesel engines.

The statistical analysis has been performed of essential design parameters characterizing crankshafts with overlapped crank webs, used in automotive and tractor engines, and density function diagrams drawn there for. Processing these diagrams enabled to get equations for calculation of efficient notch-sensitivity indices.

Limitations on acceptable weight grow of main running gear parts in the context of production of V-8 engines
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — 22—24, 31.
Keywords: diesel engines.

Design amendments may in some cases result in heavier main running gear parts. The author offers a calculation method, formulae and diagrams to yield maximum acceptable weight increment of a piston, a connecting rod and its ends as applied to V-8 engines. Observing the calculated weight limits ensures that the total unbalanced mass of the main running gear will not exceed the design limitations. This contributes into better performance of the main running gear in terms of Intensity and regularity of main bearing wear, service life, MTBF, engine noise and vibration.

Improvement in combustion characteristics of ??16,5/18,5 engine as a part of engine nodernization
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 1999. — ? 4. — 25—27, 37.
Keywords: diesel engines.

The article discusses the results of testing the engine version with BMEP increased to 1,82,0 MPa. The limits are determined to which fuel efficiency can be improved in principle for the engine with fuel and breathing systems' configuration similar to the tested one. Based on the calculated heat release curves, the directions have been identified of further improvement in combustion characteristics of ??16,5/18,5 engine model.
