The article offers the analytic and experimental results of a research program concerning the influence of cylinder liner ribbing on a temperature of a liner itself and the associated piston, as applied to YAMZ 13/14 engine. Ribs are shown as contributing into decrease in temperature of both said parts caeteris paribus, or allowing certain boost in BMEP in engines with non-cooled pistons.

A method of smoothing and consequent identification of trends in experiments, which may be implemented in diagnostics systems. The method is based on a simple integral transformation allowing generalization of the integration routine. An example is discussed of a smoothed characteristic, wherein 22 types of linear and non-linear trends have been identified using the same algorithm.
