The results are discussed of tests and analyses concerning intensification of air/fuel mixture ignition with single-electrode spark plugs, which enable adjustment of interelectrode spacing during engine operation. Use of such spark plugs is shown as allowing control over development of initial nucleation site for ignition as a function of engine load and speed.

The results are discussed of experiments targeted at more rapid combustion of propane/air mixtures in isochoric calorimetric bomb. Ignition was initiated with pulse jet of high-energy inflammable mixtures exhausted from a pre- chamber. Special type electric discharges have been provided in ignition nucleation site. The method is shown as considerably increasing combustion velocity and engine thermal efficiency.

Infrared spectroscopy provides valuable information of oil quality and condition of oil additives. Therefore, it is most instrumental for evaluation of oil alkalinity and, to an extent, overall oil quality. Besides, based on this method, judgments can be made of the necessity of oil refilling, change or additional cleaning. Ferrography, together with other diagnostic methods, provides representative information of engine wear end enables fault prediction.' It may be used for maximizing engine life, and serves as timely indication of various failures.

Diagnostic approach is offered based on deviation of a selected parameter from its value calculated with mathematical model for concrete operational environment. Condition of heat exchangers, in particular, water, oil and air coolers, is demonstrated as one of key factors affecting engine performance. In support of the above approach, evaluation has been carried out of the condition of Sulzer engine jacket water cooler.

The decision described in the article is targeted at lowering the contents of toxic components in engine exhaust gases. No changes in engine parts or systems are needed. Exhaust gas recirculation system is connected to the exhaust piping downstream filtering neutralizer. Both features enable decrease in the contents of pollutants in exhaust gases of 6Ч18/22 engine to the requirements of MARPOL and GOST R.

Diagnostic vibration test in question enables prediction of bearing assemblies residual life. The method is based on excitation of resonant oscillation. Such an approach enables to limit influence of external noises and improve accurateness of diagnostics. Laboratory plant is described enabling removal of water/fuel fractions from engine lube oil as part of oil reclamation. The plant allows adjustment of some process parameters such as temperature, vacuum, and water contents in used oil.

The article discusses the research into influence of lube compounds containing various additives on wear resistance of tribological «gray cast iron-chrome plating» pairs. Characteristic of such pairs are demanding boundary friction conditions, imitated in tests. Typical pair of the kind is chrome plated piston ring and cast iron cylinder liner. 5 Russian and 16 imported additives have been evaluated, with 3 structural/ strength pair variants. Tribological quality was evaluated by a number of particular and complex criteria.

The article discusses new powder metallurgy technologies for bimetal frictionproof bushings, enabling automation of some production procedures. Relationship is establisned between powder properties, dimensions of powder-charging devices and bushings. Nomogram is offered for determination of chargers dimensions to yield bushings with preset frictionproof layer thickness.
