The article discusses the results of analyses and tests of unit-cast and multi- component piston skirts in medium-speed four-stroke internal combustion engines. Shortcomings of the existing piston skirt design are demonstrated. Proposed alterations in design features include changes in cross section of critical piston skirt zones in order to ensure higher load capacity and longer piston life.

A way of determination of crankshaft internal marginal dimensions is discussed. The method is based on determining the crank drive points' coordinates. Coordinates of connecting rod points in the connecting rod- related rectangular coordinate system are used as source data. Examples are presented of application of the method to in-row and V-shaped engines.

Analysis of horizontal piston movement with a view of piston and cylinder liner dimensional optimization

A model is offered consisting of two differential equations, which enables analysis of horizontal piston movement in high-speed diesel engine cylinder. Unlike known models, the one in question accounts for the piston moment of inertia as well as thermal, manufacturing process-related, and contact deformations of a piston and a cylinder liner. The example of calculations based on the above model is demonstrated applied to 12ΧΝ18/20 engine.

Stochastic prediction models are offered based on exponential approximation and polynomial expressions for failure rate, empirical failure distribution function and probability of survival. The models in question employ generalized function method, method of least squares and correlation analysis. Typical calculations are presented applied to centrifugal and reciprocating pumps, turbochargers and fuel separators.

Evaluation of lube oil additives' effect on wearing quality and tribological characteristics of «gray cast iron- electroplate chrome» tribological situations

Lube oil compositions with various anti-friction and anti-wear additives have been tested. The tests have been targeted at evaluation of how each particular additive effected performance of such tribological situations as «gray cast iron cylinder liner-chromate treated piston ring», characterized by high friction of boundary. 30 tribological situations have been investigated. Resulting empirical curves have been analyzed in terms of structure/energy theory of wear. Functions yielded well fit the general energy-related wear model.
