JSC Kolomna Works: 110 Years of Engine Building
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. ? 2013. ? ? 2. ? P. 7?14.
Keywords: Kolomna Works, anniversary, engine building, history.

In summer 1863 military engineer A.E. Struve, who won a contract for construction of a railway bridge across Moscow River, founded a workshop in the town of Kolomna as an industrial base for the bridge construction. This marked the beginning of Kolomna Works development. In year 1903 the first single-cylinder diesel engine rated at 18 BHP was built under a license granted by Nobel brothers. The article includes a historical background of establishment and development of engine production for railways, industry and navy.

Evaluation of Mechanical Losses in Modern Piston Engines
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. ? 2013. ? ? 2. ? P. 15?20.
Keywords: mechanical losses, mechanical losses pressure, piston engine, piston rings, motor oil viscosity.

The authors substantiated the necessity of new, more accurate formula for evaluation of mechanical losses in modern piston engines, taking account of engine load, piston rings' flexibility and motor oil viscosity. Such formula was offered and demonstrated to be largely adequate. Recommendations were offered concerning reasonable choice of initial data to be used with said formula.

Simulation of Combustion Process in Automotive Engine for Diagnostic Purposes
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. ? 2013. ? ? 2. ? P. 21?25.
Keywords: internal combustion engine, mathematical simulation, engine diagnostics.

Combustion process in automotive petrol engine type GAS-52 (6?8,2/11) was simulated as a means to obtain information of engine failure symptoms. The research included verification of the code yielded. In particular, engine operation with leaking combustion chamber was simulated. A classification is offered for engine healthy/faulty conditions.

IMO Tier-3 Implementation with Respect to NOx Emission is Postponed till 2021
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. ? 2013. ? ? 2. ? P. 26?32.
Keywords: marine diesel engines, NOx emission, emission control areas, IMO Tier-3 standard, postponement of implementation.

The 65th session of Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) discussed, inter alia, status and commercial availability of existing technologies targeted at the reduction in NOx emission from marine diesel engines by 80 %. In the course of discussion concerning maturity of technologies underlying implementation of NOx control areas (NECA) and Tier-3 NOx standards since 1 January 2016, Russian delegation managed to insist on a decision to amend the implementation date to 1 January 2021

Environment-friendly Operation Using LPG on the MAN BW Dual Fuel ME-GI Engine (CIMAC 2010)
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. ? 2013. ? ? 2. ? P. 48?58.
Keywords: Marine low-speed diesel engine, dual fuel operation, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petrol gas, pilot fuel, emissions.

The paper describes the MAN BW project that resulted in the development of ME-GI series dual duel version. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is demonstrated as a means to considerably reduce noxious emissions from two-stroke engines. The authors note that limited LNG usage is caused by shortage of small-size LNG terminals and LNG supply ships. As an alternative, liquefied petrol gas (LPG) is considered. LPG is easier available, and, besides, its use does not involve cryogenic technologies , which means notable reduction of initial expenses.
The paper is translated into Russian by G.Melnik.
