The article provides comparative analysis of modern medium speed marine diesel engines from leading international manufacturers. The analysis is added with recommendations on ways of development of new competitive domestic-made marine diesel engines and modernization of existing models.

A new combustion model was offered. The model was used as a basis to develop a new method of analysis of HCCI engine combustion process, which would yield current values of heat release rate, heat transfer, and changes in working medium mass, volume and composition. Indicated parameters of combustion process in supercharged HCCI were calculated for varying load and speed values.

A new method is offered for coreless moulding of hollow cast iron bars. The article includes the analysis of formation of flakish graphite cast iron moulding, making use of high heat removal rate. The new method results in mouldings with given composition and improved mechanical & service properties.

The paper in question presents preliminary results of HERCULES integrated project, carried out by major engine makers MAN and Wartsila partly funded by European Union. The project in general is targeted at evaluation of practical limits of emission reduction in transport and marine diesel engines by integration of various successful technologies, without compromising efficiency. Challenges arising from dual duel operation are considered, and solutions of problems involved are analyzed.
