Starting performance of a marine diesel-generator
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 10–14.
Keywords: marine diesel-generator, hydromechanical fuel injection system, accumulator fuel injection system, starting air consumption, start-up duration, transient period.

Presented are the results of testing the marine AC diesel-generator, equipped with hydromechanical and accumulator fuel injection systems, for air-starting performance. The investigation revealed main factor that influence air consumption, start-up duration and transient period (until a set speed level is reached) for cold and hot start. Accumulator fuel injection system was demonstrated as a preferable technology in terms of engine starting and transient performance.

Balancing engine type VR-5
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 15–20.
Keywords: compact engines type VR-5, vee-angle, d?saxage, uniform firing sequence, forces and moments of inertia, balancing.

The article discusses balancing 4-stroke V-type and quasi V-type reciprocating engines, differing in vee-angles, angular offset of adjacent crankpins, and d?saxage. Formulae are given for calculation and analysis of forces of inertia induced by reciprocating and rotating masses, and moments of said forces in type VR-5 engines, as functions of vee-angle, crank radius/connecting rod length ratio, and cylinder axis relative d?saxage. A method is offered of balancing inertia forces from rotating and reciprocating masses as applied to VR-5 type engines.

«ABB Turbocharging»' presentation at CIMAC-2019 Congress
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 21–23.
Keywords: locomotive and marine diesel engines, high-pressure turbochargers, pressure ratio, 2-stage supercharge systems.

A brief review of recent developments from ABB Turbo Systems presented at CIMAC-2019. In particular, the Company developed new 2-stage supercharge system ABB Power-2, containing three turbochargers, to be used in locomotive engines rated at 24 bar (MEP). Also, there are descriptions of new turbocharger series À200-Í (process ration 6.5) for 4-stroke middle-speed engines, and compact turbocharger series À200-L for 2-stroke low-speed engines, intended for operation in ÅÑÀ zones.

Prediction of engine part remaining life based on fatigue criterion
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 24–28.
Keywords: parts of marine diesel engines, material fatigue, life time, crack, prediction of remaining life, simulation, probabilistic methods.

They make use of modern approaches to physics of cumulative fatigue damage in engine parts exposed to various cyclic loads. Also, they offer calculation methods for prediction of engine parts' fatigue life. Mechanism of crack development, followed by part failure, is analysed in detail. Examples are given of evaluation of remaining life for such parts, using function dependences developed by the authors.

Oil sump gas flow as a function of reciprocating engine thermal condition
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 29–31.
Keywords: automotive engine, oil sump gas, warm-up mode, operation at negative ambient air temperature, lube oil, engine life time.

Lube oil conditions are negatively affected by oil sump gas, which may result in shorter engine life time, which is particularly true for start-up and warm-up operation at negative ambient temperature. Oil sump gas flow was measured in a series of actual experiments, carried out on five KAMAZ-740.30-260 engines powering KAMAZ-5350 trucks. Based on the test results, a dependence between oil sump gas flow and coolant temperature was drawn, which could be approximated by quadratic. Various methods of reduction in oil sump gas flow have been considered.

Reliability of stand-alone power supplies for military users
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 32–37.
Keywords: infrastructure of military users, power and heat energy supplies, distributed power supply system, alternative power sources, probabilistic model, availability.

The authors are concentrated on structural reliability of existing and future distributed power supply systems for military users. Special stress is laid on alternative power sources. In particular, the authors offer evaluative probabilistic model for reliability calculations, using weight coefficients. Advantages and promising ways of improvement of hybrid power supply systems are demonstrated, criterion function including maximum availability coefficient, given limited reliability of system components.

Alternative fuels (based on CIMAC-2016 papers)
// Dvigatelestroyeniye. — 2019. — ¹ 4. — P. 38–57.
Keywords: dual fuel engines (DF), alternative fuels, alcohols, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petrol gas, ultra low sulphur distillate and residual fuels, existing field experience with DF engines.

Distillate oil and residual oil are currently dominant fuels for middle-speed marine diesel engines. However, global warming and increasing air pollution inspire engine builders to look for alternative fuels. Among the alternatives, alcohol fuels seem very interesting, as they have potential to lower NOx, CO2 and PM emissions simultaneously. As from 1 January 2015, the maximum sulphur limit for Emission Control Areas (SECA) was reduced to 0,10 % m/m. As a consequence of the new sulphur emission legislation, many new fuel qualities have entered the market, including distillate fuel and residual fuel, both the Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) with a sulphur content of ~ 10 mg/kg. There is growing share of marine dual fuel engines using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). In this review focus is put on the physical and chemical properties of the 0,10 % m/m sulphur fuels introduced for SECA areas, and field experience with DF engines firing alternative fuels.
